There are three islands in the Maltese Archipelago between Sicily and the African Coast: Malta, Comino, and Gozo. Gozo is the site of Circe’s cave where, in Homer’s Odyssey, Odysseus was imprisoned by Circe for years as he pined for Ithaca.
The capital Rabat, renamed Victoria by the British, sits atop a hill in the center of the island. The narrow twisting medieval streets led me, one Sunday, into a little plaza where I sat sketching a sidewalk café and watching the people come and go from Mass. A Brit who saw me sketching talked to me of watercolor painting as I worked. Delightful and memorable afternoon in Gozo, Malta.

  1. Beautiful Robert! Sounds like a wonderful trip.

    • Thanks so much Vicky. Great to hear from you. Malta and Gozo are islands in the Mediterranean that Americans seldom visit. Wonderful locale for painting, or full-time living for that matter. The trip was superb.

  2. Indeed, very nice. I don’t know if this is by chance, but Gozo in Spanish means “Delight”, or “Enjoyment”. It definitely looks like a place to enjoy. If you are keen on Mediterranean islands, may I recommend Corsica? There is some great scenery for painting there too! Finally, I love the sketch.

    • That is a very cool coincidence. The Maltese language goes back to the ancient Phoenicians and is thus an Arabic based language. I think Gozo is someone’s name rather than a descriptive word. However, the island is delightful and thus fits the Spanish meaning well. I will investigate Corsica…thanks for the tip. I appreciate your interest in my work.

  3. do you sell your paintings? or prints of? im searching for an image i would like to canvas – 120x120c min. funny that i chose this image out of the 100s ive seen through my search – im actually maltese myself and have been to that very spot in gozo, our second home.

    • Hi Sara,

Thank you for your interest in my work.

I only sell and authorize my work solely in its original form.
I do this to protect the value and uniqueness of the original work of art.

The painting of the Gozo scene is approx. 40.5 X 30.5 cm (16 X 12 in.). It is a watercolor painting on Arches archival paper. It comes matted, unframed, and sells for $825 (US).

If you find that you are interested in purchasing the original, I would be happy to discuss that with you.

I do so love Malta, especially the warm, friendly Maltese people that I met there. I hope to return one day,
      My best,
      Robert McArthur, artist

    • Hi Sara,

I have considered your request and may have a solution.

I could send you a high def digital image via Dropbox. The cost would be $150 paid to PayPal. You could then take it to a printshop and have it printed as desired. I would send you an authorization for use of copyrighted material via email.
Let me know if this solution works for you.
My best and thank you for contacting me,
      Robert McArthur
